timisverysmall covers a spread from math-rock intricacy to soothing keyboard stillness, makes it all sound natural together. many fine details to thrill the ear. Favorite track: Segment 3: At Sea.

gigapatrick Electric Brain's best work to date. A moody concept album that eschews contemporary structures in favor of almost symphonic movements. Like the golem itself, made animate out of the inert and commanded to life by supernatural power. Favorite track: Segment 4B: Return (incl. Golem iv).

Curtain on our heroin throwing up in a floor drain Idiot sun beats through the haze of the dusty windows overhead Animals shriek in pain and fear, rattle bars of their cage Cancerous ooze eats through their veins and their eyes are blistered, melt away Like a drop of molten lead makes omens in its cooling She can read the future in the splatter on the floor The needle falls out of her shaking hand and she says
3.
Golem i 03:54
The golem awakes in a windowless room Somewhere in the ancient city Peers at the light from the bulb overhead Pulls the ring and descends through the trapdoor An ominous shape that has grown in a dream To gnaw through the walls of the mind A mirage that will ache in the struggle to form A clot that has built over time The golem crawls through dampness and gloom Somewhere in the ancient city Moves by the sound from the street overhead Sightless eyed and evenly breathing Sensing the throb of the life of the world Fleeing the chill of the ground Drawn from its hole like a crab from the sand Feeling the shift of the tide
4.
Later that night, again at the bar, Kate finds herself engulfed in silence She drinks and she talks, she stares at the sky, feels sound in her bones, but she hears nothing Hollow and fluid like a bag in the wind, carried away by motion without reason She looks through the windows, at the people outside, milling in crowds, radiantly glowing Ecstatic under the stars That douse them in venomous light Like the blossoms paying for springtime In the act of blooming, dying “And am I one of them? Do I feel as they feel?” And again with no conscious choice She finds herself out in the crowd Stumbling next to a man Whose name she does not recall His face too blank to recognize But too familiar to fear And the golem crawls through darkness Under the ancient city It hears the people above it And it feels the water around it And the golem has no memory And the golem knows no direction And the golem runs like liquid Its mind is dust in the sun Now Kate in the bedroom in a house by the sea The man brought her here but she can’t recall coming Tasting the cold air she understands Somehow the adepts have poisoned the moonlight She falls down the stairway and out the back door Trips down the path toward the churn of the ocean And the Golem feels its body rise Against something heavy and cold It pushes the manhole cover aside Rises into the street And the Golem walks to the doorway Of the house beside the sea
5.
Now she stumbles up the shore, back to the house by the sea Walks up, shakes the locked front door Walking through the garden, she sees a light Looking through the window, in the morning glow She sees her own body on the bed She sees the man hang above her; her hands run down his back Looks into her own pleasureless eyes And sees her hands reach up to the man’s throat Runs down the beach and hurls herself into the sea

“Strange to think that once there was a planet With no one there, no mind that could observe And from the dark, life flickered for a moment And as it died it dreamed itself important Am I a clock whose hands move in two directions? Am I a crow choking on the stone of wisdom? Am I a cell that runs across a slide chasing poison? The night is cold and clear, the stars are prickling at the water The moon’s a sharpened stone to cut a glowing hole in the water The night is cold and clear, the cosmic ecstasy of the mincer Loves go by, and roll like pearls falling From broken string, tumbling away And destiny, is an animal that’s sickened Staggering, in decreasing circles Adrift on my back I will try to ignore The slow going out of the lights on the shore ‘Cause I know my own way home An animal bred into captivity And still ready to chase any sign of release Or a scent of a great unknown Europe will crash into Africa And give birth to a new Himalaya And my bones will fossilize in an inland sea”

Kate in the cold air, shivering, crawls like a wreck from the sea Lost revelations falling away, withering shreds of a dream She trips through the wet sand, and she climbs the bluff, back to the house by the sea Door hanging open, but no one home, the world gone dead and empty
8.
The roads, the houses and the cars Deserted for a thousand years No birds sit upon the wires No rain disturbs a sunless dawn Among the ancient artifacts Even footsteps sounding wrong Trash and bits of floating scrap Play among the fallen leaves And chase each other through the breeze
9.
Golem iii 03:49
The golem sits for endless hours and stares at empty rooms The golem walks alone at night and drinks the poison moon The golem tortures animals and picks through their remains It masturbates until it bleeds and feels no joy or pain
10.
Kate walks through the silent streets Sleeps beneath the shattered lights Or in the emptied-out museums The empty houses she burns for light and heat, hears them sizzle in the rain She leaves murals on the roads for no one’s eyes but her own She climbs into the empty towers Tosses rocks that echo down and knock the windows out below The chime of the song of broken glass calling up from far below Sings a song for her alone She drives, speeds through empty roads, the wind haloing her hair And the road becomes familiar Now drawn up the mountain she knew long ago Up the hill in summer light and the world fades away Hangs in black nothingness for lifetime after lifetime… “Until the sun begins to rise And etch my body line by line Drawn back into the world Into the rushing stream of time” Huddled on the concrete floor, the golem feels nothing …As a giant pearl, engulfed in slime comes sliding from its body …As the golem’s flesh withers …As its empty husk dries up and blows away

about

A concept album about despair, disassociation and transformation, inspired by Gustav Meyrink's The Golem and the work of Haruki Murakami. The music is intricate, textured, and dynamic, with influence from ambient, progressive rock, and post-punk. Gorgeous choral vocals show up to add sweetness; microtones show up to add umami. This took me two years to make and is the only thing I've ever made that turned out like I'd imagined it.

about

Electric Brain Electric Shadow Olympia, Washington

Electric Brain Electric Shadow marries the compositional sophistication of progressive rock with the textural richness of ambient music, the dynamics of post-rock, and the emotional vulnerability of alternative and post-punk. The resulting sound is complex yet accessible, attentive to details of sound and arrangement, and evocative of thoughtful melancholy. ... more
